The article poses the problem of cultural discourse in the study of the family. Being an interdisciplinary subject of research, the family is traditionally considered by the priority sciences of socio-humanitarian knowledge - psychology and sociology. The author of the article, based on the concepts of cultural anthropologists, whose theories contributed to the formation of the science of cultural studies, makes an attempt at a cultural analysis of the genesis and development of the family as a cultural phenomenon. The diversity of family models, its structure and functional purpose are largely determined by the type of culture that corresponds to a particular nation. The article considers "universal" cultural patterns that constitute the essence of culturological approach, and also substantiates the role of tradition as a dominant component of culture that has a priority impact on the family.
