The article provides an overview of domestic and foreign studies of cross-cultural aspects of psychological separation from parents. It is noted that, in general, the separation of young people in Russia differs from the separation in Western countries. This fact is explained by both cultural and historical (caring attitude towards children, collectivist orientation, child-centrism) and socio-economic characteristics of different countries. However, as a rule, the studies available today either consider the gender aspects of separation, or are limited to one culture and one people. Moreover, these studies are often contradictory. It is concluded that the cross-cultural features of the transition to a state of personal autonomy and the problem of the influence of psychological separation on the quality of social functioning and human viability require further study. In particular, the effect of the separation process on the formation of viability and vision is of interest.
