The article presents the results of a qualitative study of attachment patterns and characteristics of the family system in mothers in penitentiary institutions. An integral part of the family system of these women are patterns of attachment in relationships with their own mothers, and also often include intergenerational experience of transmitting "family myths", which for the most part had a negative connotation. It has been proved that deviant motherhood of women in prison is formed as a result of transgenerational transmission of dysfunctional characteristics of family systems, expressed in the peculiarities of family members' relationships, authoritarian rules, lack of emotional ties and stabilizers of family systems has been confirmed in the framework of the study.
