the presence of stereotypies is the main diagnostic sign of autism. Stereotypical behavior is not always self-harming in autism, and strictly speaking, self-harm is not a symptom of autism, but a significant number of people with autism have this tendency. Correcting this form of unwanted behavior reduces the risk of injury, teaches alternative ways of behavior and communication, and helps cope with anxiety. This becomes especially significant when working with children with autism spectrum disorders who have certain forms of self-harmful behavior.
The article presents three clinical cases of children with autism spectrum disorders aged 3 years, 3.5 years and 8 years. The study was conducted on the basis of the Psychological and Pedagogical Center “Children at the University”, created at the Department of Pedagogy and Valueology of the Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution of Higher Education “North-Eastern State University” (Magadan) (hereinafter referred to as the Center). All children undergo developmental diagnostics at the Center and attend correctional and developmental classes.
Diagnosis was carried out by observation, which involves direct perception of an act of self-harmful behavior, its description, a description of traces of self-harm, as well as the sensory characteristics of children. Functional behavior analysis is a method used in applied behavior analysis to determine the function of behavior.
