CONSTRUCTING DEFINITIONS: FROM MANIPULATION TO ADAPTIVE INTELLIGENCE

Gut V. V.  (Ph.D. of Psychology, AQ Institute (Moscow) )

Dotsenko E. L.  (Grand Ph.D. of Psychology, Professor, Tyumen State University )

Approaches to creating definitions of scientific concepts, their methodology and the methods used are discussed. The processes (sometimes poorly realized) are described, due to which definitions “ripen” in the scientific community: the author’s appeal to his linguistic instinct (the practice of word usage), the explicit formulation of a previously implicit definition, the coordination of the views of different authors, the approval of the norm for using the concept. On the example of the concepts of "interpersonal manipulation", "intelligence" and "emotional intelligence", possible ways of purposefully constructing definitions are discussed, their possibilities are analyzed. A procedure for constructing a definition of the concept of "adaptive intelligence" based on the results of an empirical study is proposed. An assessment of the definition obtained in this way is given: adaptive intelligence is the ingenuity, resourcefulness/ingenuity and skills, positively recognized by society, shown by an individual or group in solving vitally urgent problems.

Keywords:adaptive intelligence, intelligence, emotional intelligence, definition, implicit definitions, everyday consciousness
