The article examines the points of view on the concepts of "personal identity" and "identity" of foreign researchers. The analysis of approaches to the consideration of the construct "personal identity" is presented. From a philosophical point of view, the key points of the concept's content are shown, referring to the ability to recognize one's own qualities and their similarities and differences in other people. The greatest place is given to psychoanalytic views, since it is in this approach that the procedural and substantive characteristics of the construct of relatively healthy people, growing up and the clinical picture of the phenomenon are described. In behavioral and cognitive approaches, personal and social identities are linked by intra-group and intergroup processes. Identity as a result of identification has a gender aspect.
In the cognitive approach, identity is considered as a cognitive set of processes by which behavior is controlled and regulated depending on existing conditions. Identity as a dynamic developing process is presented in the interrelation of its individual and social sides As a representative of ego psychology, E. Erickson draws attention to the age aspect of identity formation. Through the description of the types and components of the concept, it is possible to trace how the content of the construct "personal identity" in foreign psychology is clarified.
