The article examines the variants of human duality, presents an analysis of the unity of opposing natural and social characteristics in the essence of the human individual in the philosophical texts of Russian enlighteners of the 18th century. The essence of man is not something abstract, it is concrete and historical. Man in different historical eras combines specific and typical features of each era. The era of Russian Enlightenment is characterized, first of all, by the general process of secularization of Russian culture, one of the most important signs of which was the formation of ethical and philosophical consciousness, the definition of the subject of ethics as a philosophical science, the conceptual structuring of moral consciousness.
