Formal models of evolution of scientific theory

Arkhiereev Nikolay L`vovitch  (Bauman Moscow State Technical University)

The article is concerned with various formal models of evolution of scientific theory. A cumulative model, based on standard approach to scientific theory, presents evolution of science as a continuous linear process. An abstract character of this model has been severely criticized, which results in statements of incommensurability of scientific theories, of unrealistic nature of scientific postulates and of inapplicability of notions of formal truth and falsity to the theories of natural science. A set-theoretic model of evolution of science, based on generalization of Tarski`s notion of theory model, allows to avoid certain drawbacks of cumulative model and demonstrates partial integrity of scientific evolution.

Keywords:theory, model, formalization, axiomatization, truth, verisimilitude
