Historical memory in the Mari ethnic and cultural landscape of the Kirov region

The meaning of the Mari’s sacral landscapes (situated on the territory of the Yaransk, Sovetsk, Malmyzh areas of the Kirov region and devoted to the worship of legendary ancestors) is revealed in the article. The architecture of these memorial places and the cult features related to such components of Mari pagan ideology as belief in keremets, nars, protection of legendary heroes. The meaning of the memorial centres is revealed through studying the peculiarities of the worship of mountains, trees and water, and images of heroic ancestors in folk legends. The deep folk affection to locus of its dwelling as the land of their ancestors is shown in worship of the memorial places of ethnocultural landscape.
