The article analyzes the state of affairs in physical education at the university at the present stage. It is noted that the normative-imperative style of relationships in the "teacher-student" relationship is undergoing significant transformations. The content of the subject is not the basis for a motivated attitude towards the learning process for a large part of young people. At the same time, a significant part of the teaching staff of universities continues to consider their role as a leader as a sufficient basis for translating their values. The contradiction that arises in the process of communication can be fatal for the formation of students' sustainable interest in physical culture. To resolve this contradiction, it is proposed to construct a dialogue space of a special kind, in which not target indicators come first, but the personal relations of the participants in the dialogue. The figure of a teacher in this space turns out to be an instance that does not subjugate students, building trusting relationships with them. The task of teachers is to make the values of physical culture meaningful and authorial for the students themselves. It is emphasized that when training teachers in special educational institutions, it is necessary to correct curricula with an emphasis on the current state of educational content.
