The article presents an analysis of Western and Chinese concepts of Chinese mentality and its influence on Chinese civilization. The study discusses theoretical aspects of the problem of Chinese mentality associated with the use of a civilizational approach. It is revealed that the civilizational approach of Western and Chinese authors differs in key provisions related to ideas about geocivilization. The presented analysis of the socio-cultural space of China allows us to form ideas about the approach in state cultural policy aimed at strengthening national identity and social cohesion, where an appeal to the traditions of mentality plays a significant role. In the conditions of the modern world, the Chinese mentality forms its role identity, preserving the "value core" and adapting to new realities, based on maintaining a balance between tradition and modernity. An analysis of the literature on the topic of the foundations of the socio-cultural world, mentality and identity in China shows that studies of China in the West have certain traditions that significantly affect the content and problems of studies devoted to the features of the legitimization of power in this country. It is revealed that Chinese scientific thought is focused on the development of a concept of cultural policy, which includes mechanisms for the formation of modern statehood and civic identity of Chinese citizens in the context of globalization based on the recognition of the unity and diversity of the culture of modern China.
