Romanov Alexander Sergeevich  (PhD in philology, Military University of the Russian Federation Defense Ministry)

Shnyakina Kira Veniaminovna  (PhD in philology, senior lecturer, Military University of the Russian Federation Defense Ministry)

This research unveils the nature of relations among such phenomena as "ethnos", "culture" and "language". Vested with the function of axiological retranslation, mottos of the U.S. Armed Forces services and branches make essential part of the army idiom and facilitate shaping and reinforcing stereotypes of the collective consciousness. Obviously, mottos of military units belong to the complex of language artefacts reflecting GI’s dominant values, behavioral patterns, world outlook and conceptosphere. This paper concludes that military mottos are typical of semantic implicitness, vocativity, brevity, metaphoricity, widespread use of Latinisms and stereotypogenicity.

Keywords:U.S. Armed Forces; army subculture; GI; stereotyping; stereotype; linguistic means and forms for explicating ethnic stereotypes; military motto; mottos of the U.S. Armed Forces services and branches.
