The article deals with the issues of engineering education against the background of changes in the economy and politics. Special emphasis is placed on the problems encountered by regional universities, the reasons for the constant shortage of applicants for engineering specialties, analyzes the relationship between the training of good engineers and their further demand for outdated, and in the regions, more often and missing production. The authors suggest measures that would help to revive these areas of training, would make training in the specialties of the technical unit in demand.
