Writing Centers in Higher Education in the USA

The article addresses the issue of Writing Centers in the system of higher education in the USA. It deals with the questions related to the roots of the Writing Centers and Writing Labs, their role and institutional status, their structure and staffing, as well as approaches and methods used to form writing competencies in university students. Finally, it discusses methods used to assess Writing Centers’ performance. The author concludes by emphasizing the high value of the empirical data gathered by the Writing Centers in the USA for the system of higher education in Russia.
