The article examines the forms of the implementation of moral or physical punishment in the North Caucasus. For centuries in the region, an exceptional measure - the punishment by physical or civilian death (exile) - remained the most effective mechanism for maintaining public order. Also rudimentary manifestations of blood feud and modern versions of using traditional methods of punishment, including imposing collective responsibility for the crimes of militants on their families and forms of female participation in blood feud distorted by the transformation of traditional consciousness, are traced.
