The article deals with the first stages of acquaintance with the profession of students of the direction "social and cultural activities" of the St. Petersburg State University of Culture - future managers of the social and cultural sphere. The results of empirical research aimed to identify the structure of interests and level of social activity of first-year full-time students, the degree of their involvement and ways of involvement in the socio-cultural activities of the Institute, self-assessment of feelings from the first stage of acquaintance with the cultural and educational space of the University. Analyzing the mechanisms of adaptation of first-year students to the practice of educational and extracurricular activities at the Institute, the authors draw attention to the need to create a favorable cultural environment for students and involve them in the practical life of cultural institutions. Since nowadays socio-cultural activity get the status of tools of the State cultural policy, technologies of designing of social and cultural communications and actions, creative industries, leisure, thus one of the most important criteria of efficiency of preparation of graduates of direction of "social-cultural activity" should be their preparedness to effectively solve the urgent problems of the state cultural policy in the process of organizing socio-cultural activities, not formally, but in a value-interested way. Thus the results of a survey of graduate students of the profile "management of socio-cultural activity", which allow us to analyze the awareness of respondents about the activities of the Ministry of culture of the Russian Federation, the activities that they conducted, the frequency of access to the website of the Ministry of culture, the cultural activities requiring support in terms of new models of state cultural policy.
