Theater in the space of a Russian provincial city in the second half of the XIX beginning of the XX century

The article on the materials of the Vyatka province reveals the role of professional and amateur theaters as a significant element of culture in the space of a provincial city in the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The conditions necessary for the formation and successful operation of these forms of theater are revealed. Particular attention is paid to the process of becoming a theater part of the leisure of citizens, performing a number of the most important socio-cultural functions: aesthetic, educational, ideological. Despite the censorship restrictions and the need to take into account the preferences of the public, theatrical productions raised problems that were relevant in the period under study, which contributed to the development of public consciousness of citizens.
