Tsarevich Alexander Iraklievich Bagration and the annexation of Georgia to Russia

Lapin Vladimir Vikentievich  (doctor of historical Sciences, leading researcher, St. Petersburg Institute of history of the Russian Academy of Sciences)

The annexation of Georgia to Russia the 19th century was accompanied by the deportation of the tsar’s Bagration family to Moscow and St.Petersburg. That was aimed to stop the internecine struggle and quell the resistance of feudal nobility. The son of the tsar Irakliy the 2nd Alexander (1770-1844) refused to accept this loss of Georgia’s independence and became the leader of military opposition, referring to the inner Georgian pushback. He got the help from the khans of Dagestan and Persia. He was one of the main enemies for all Russian generals in Caucasus. His name was often mentioned in official documents and memoirs. He especially distinguished himself during Russian-Persian 1804-1813 and the Kakhetia rebellion 1812.
