Polysemy in the system of Russian and Kumyk onomatopes

The article is devoted to the analysis of polysemantic onomatopes in Russian and Kumyk languages. When the conditions for the realization of the subjective seme change, the meaning of the onomatopes changes, which leads to its metaphorization. Metaphor is the most common type of polysemy in comparable languages. Metaphorical transfers of onomatopes follow certain patterns. The various functions of onomatopoeic words are best revealed by the context. When translating polysemantic onomatopes, it is important to take into account their ethnic and cultural specifics.
