Turgai Regional Statistical Committee: the history of formation and functioning in the late XIX – early XX centuries

In the article, on the basis of archival material and published sources, the features of the formation and development of the Turgai Statistical Committee in the late 19-th–early 20-th centuries are revealed. The mechanisms of interaction between regional authorities and the central department - the Ministry of Internal Affairs in terms of organizing a regional statistical center are analyzed. Difficulties in performing statistical work have been identified, and characteristics are given to the membership of the institution. In addition to statistical campaigns, the committee paid attention to the scientific study of the area, which was reflected in the conduct of archaeological and ethnographic research, the organization of the museum and active publishing.
