Upon the issue of loanwords in Turkish media language: politico-ideological and chronological aspects (in 2000 and 2019—2020)

Alekseeva Olga Andreevna  (postgraduate student, Lomonosov Moscow State University)

In the process of its development, the Turkish language incorporated a significant amount of loanwords. Thus, in the XIV−XIX centuries its vocabulary significantly expanded with Arab-Persian, in the XVIII−XIX centuries − French, in the XX − early XXI centuries − English words. Most of these borrowings are still used today both in common language and in the language of Turkish media. The purpose of this article is to reveal the relations between the political and ideological orientation of media outlet and the number of borrowings used in its materials in a chronological aspect (in 2000 and in 2019−2020). The study is based on political news reports published in the right-wing (Akşam, Sabah) and left-wing (Cumhuriyet, Hürriyet) newspapers in 2000 and in 2019−2020. During the analysis, the continuous sampling method, descriptive, comparative and statistical methods were applied. The study revealed that in 2019−2020 the percentage of loanwords in news materials of both right-wing and left-wing newspapers decreased compared to 2000. The number of loanwords declined mainly due to Arabic-Persian borrowings: in the materials of right-wing newspapers − by 1,5%, in the materials of left-wing newspapers − by 16,5%. The number of loanwords from European languages remained practically unchanged for all newspapers – at approximately 6,5%. At the same time, it was found out that the use of loanwords does not depend on the political and ideological orientation of media outlets, since a decrement in the number of borrowings is observed in the materials of both left-wing and right-wing media.
