Grammatical aspects of teaching professional English in Maritime colleges and universities

Petrova Nina Ivanovna  (Candidate of Philology, Associate Professor, State Maritime University after admiral G.I. Nevelskoy)

The article spotlights the problem of teaching grammar at English lessons in maritime schools. The author of the article examines various approaches to teaching English of cadets in maritime colleges and universities. The author proves that, although modern foreign language education in maritime schools is more focused on teaching grammar during the communicative activity than on teaching grammatical rules, any teacher ought to use two tried methods at the lessons– deductive and inductive ones. The deductive method is used in those cases when the cadets are needed to explain complex grammatical rules within the shortest possible period of time. The inductive method is aimed at explaining and systematizing the grammatical phenomenon by the cadets themselves. This method involves them in the intellectual process. The author comes to the conclusion that the methodology of teaching grammar should be based on three methods – inductive, deductive and communicative ones.

Keywords:maritime English, grammar, inductive method, deductive method, communicative method.
