The French language in the Ivory Coast: the past and the present

The article analyses the phenomenon of the territorial variant of the French language in the Ivory Coast (based on the TV-series Allô Tribunal). It outlines the key phases of its evolution, as well as provides a closer look at the definition of ‘the symbol’ in the context of language policy in the Ivory Coast. Main characteristics of the lexical composition of the French language are stated. Specificities of word building processes are highlighted. The article also provides examples of those lexical neologisms that have not been previously described.
