Skopa V. A.  (Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor, Altai State Pedagogical University, Barnaul)

The article examines the socio-cultural study of Kazakhstan in the second half of the 19th century based on the materials of the educator, ethnographer, historian and public figure Ibrai Altynsarin. He is one of the founders of Kazakh literature and the literary language, which gave impetus to the socio-cultural study of the region. Thanks to his work as a translator of Russian classics into the Kazakh language, he made extensive use of the experience of pedagogical writers K. D. Ushinsky and L. N. Tolstoy. Many of Altynsarin's works were of a social nature. In them, he branded administrators, Kazakh beys for their greed and ignorance. Altynsarin, not only as a teacher, but also as a research scientist, studied the history of his people, their way of life and traditions, processed and systematized the data obtained. As a result of the formed set of sources, he published works: "Essays on customs during matchmaking and weddings at the Kirghiz of the Orenburg department" and "Essays on customs at funerals and commemorations at the Kirghiz of the Orenburg department".
