The place of charactonyms in the theory of literary onomastics and the problem of transferring their phonosemantics in translation (based on the story "The golden pot: a tale from the new times" by E.T.A. Hoffman)

Anokhina Anna   (Assistant, Far Eastern Federal University)

The article deals with the problem of finding a universal term for names of literary characters, the problem of transferring the form, content and phonosemantic component of these names into another language when translating a literary text. The purpose of this study was to find, on the basis of existing works on the study of categories of literary onomastics, the most successful universal term for the names of both anthropomorphic (having human qualities and behavior) and anthropic characters of fiction, as well as on the material of the story of E. T. A. Hoffman's "The Golden Pot: A Tale from the New Times", analyze the names of the characters for the correspondence of the phonosemantics of their names to their images in the original work and its translations into English and Russian. The article used comparative and contrastive methods, as well as a method for evaluating phonosemantic characteristics. The result of the analysis of scientific works on the theory of literary onomastics was the discovery of the term "charactonym" and its adoption, within the framework of this article, as a universal term for names of literary characters, which is justified in the text of this study. The results of the analysis of the phonosemantic characteristics of the names of the heroes of the story by E. T. A. Hoffman "The Golden Pot: A Tale from the New Times" showed that more than half of the analyzed translations of charactonyms, both in English and in Russian, do not coincide with the original in phonosemantic characteristics. Thus, the English reader may have unpleasant associations with the name of the main hero (Anselmus), and the Russian - with the name of the main heroin (Serpentina), which may distort the reader's understanding of the main idea of the original work in translation.
