Stylistic functions of numerals in a literary text in the aspect of translation (on the material of translations of stories by A.P. Chekhov)

The article discusses the ways of translating numerals in a literary text. Numerals indicating age, time duration, measures of weight, length are compared with their translations. The functions they perform as part of hyperbole, litotes and gradation in the original text are analysed in comparison with the translation. The conclusion is made about the variety of means of transferring numerals in the translation of a literary text, which, in general, are able to reflect the uniqueness of the original text.
