Eleanor Roosevelt: from growing up to marriage

Shul’ga M. M.  (Cand. Sc. (History), Associate Professor, Smolensk State Medical University, Smolensk)

The article is devoted to the description of the life of Eleanor Roosevelt in childhood, growing up and meeting her husband-to-be Franklin Roosevelt, and also describes the married life of a young couple in the first years of marriage. Separately, the author touches the issue of the influence of Eleanor's environment (her mother, father, maternal grandmother, uncle Theodore Roosevelt, founder of the Allenwood Academy for Girls Marie Souvestre) on the formation of the personality of the future First Lady, her character, habits, fears and patterns of behavior, as well as completely independent line of conduct. The article examines in detail the relationships and crises (such as marital indiscretion of Franklin, the death of the third child and FDR’s polio) in the family of Eleanor and Franklin Roosevelt, as well as the influence of Franklin's mother, Sarah Delano Roosevelt, who tried to build an archaic strategy in relations between young spouses.
