Vistisen Ekaterina Pavlovna  (PhD in Classics research fellow, Institute of Linguistics, Russian Academy of Science (Moscow))

The paper deals with so-called Adonic verse found in fragments of Ancient Greek lyric poet Sappho. Aeolian poet shows perfect understanding of the phenomenon which may be called "timbral basis" and be found on the edge of meter and assonance. The paper contents examples of Adonic verse analyzed with new method including "timbral basis". Classification of "timbral basis" (anaphoric, kataphoric, "weak" and "strong") is given with examples from Sappho's poems. Sappho prefers not to use "timbral basis" with Adonic verse. The main difference between "timbral basis" of hexameter and lyric verse is also discussed. RSF 18-18-00503.
