This paper covers a range of issues related to teaching English in maritime universities. Micro-learning is one of the optimal approaches to modern teaching, because this approach is aimed at representing a small amount of material in a short period of time. The popularity of micro-learning is associated with a dynamically changing external world in which students need to process large flows of information quickly. These streams of information are divided, or split into smaller units. In the context of teaching maritime English, such units are the news of navigation. Consequently, the analysis of news events by cadets of maritime universities at English lessons seems relevant and in demand. One of the techniques of learning is the case study. Cases are relevant situations connected with future professional activities. They are analyzed and discussed in group and then cadets make decisions. Case study is effective in development both English for Specific Purposes and critical thinking.

Keywords:micro-learning, hyper-attention, case study, developing skills, professionally-oriented teaching, critical thinking.
