The object of the research paper is the sociocultural component of the meaning of the lexical items involved in the project “The Word of The Year” by Oxford Dictionaries from 2011-2020. The subject is the classification of these lexical items based on the principle of public sphere. The article is aimed at discovering the origin of 96 words of the project from 2011-2020 and their public sphere to explain the sociocultural changes in the English-speaking community. The results of the study confirm the tenet that the vocabulary of a language presents a system affected by the cultural and social changes in the society, a system which displays a sensitive reaction to the changing interpersonal and social relations. The changes in the vocabulary run parallel to the social and cultural changes in a language community.
