Increasing motivation of non-linguistic students for learning foreign languages to improve their professional competence

The article discusses the issues of medical students’ motivation in mastering a foreign language as one of the important elements of improving their professional competence. The authors present a theoretical analysis of methods for increasing motivation and the results of studies conducted at a medical university. Students were tested to study the level of foreign language proficiency and readiness to learn the professional language. Based on the questionnaire developed by the authors, an interview was conducted to identify students’ motives for learning foreign languages. The article presents a model for developing professional foreign language competence in e-learning environment which integrates new information technologies in teaching process. The authors consider it to be the way for increasing students’ motivation to professional communication in foreign languages.
