OPPOSITION LINGUISTIC MODELS OF POSSIBLE WORLDS IN H. WELLS' ROMAN “THE TIME MACHINE”

Kvachuk Kseniya Dmitrievna  (Postgraduate student, Pacific State University)

The article deals with the concept of the possible world as applied to the fantasy work of Herbert Wells "The Time Machine". Based on the analysis of the text of the novel the lexical and thematic group "distinctive characteristics of Eloi and Morlocks" is distinguished. The lexical units included in this group are used to construct linguistic models of two possible worlds of the novel - the world of ground dwellers - Eloi and the underworld of Morlocks. These models show clear differences in the life style of the characters, which confirms the main character's assumptions about the possible outcome of further events in the real world of 19th-century England, indicates the problems of class division in society.

Keywords:possible worlds; fiction novel; time and space; literary work
