The article studies different ways of translation of phraseological units with an ornithonym component in English, Russian and Tatar languages. The phraseological units of studied languages reflect both national and cultural peculiarities and common features. The use of idioms in speech and understanding of their translation indicates a high level of knowledge of a foreign language. Such translation methods as full and partial equivalents, complete and partial analogues, as well as non-equivalent translation methods were considered. The article notes that when translating, a complex unity of meaning components, semantic and connotative, appears. Practical recommendations were given for the use of the studied phraseological units in foreign language classes.
