CITIZENS OF SOUTH ITALY UNDER THE GOVERNMENT OF ROGER II (1920S - 1930S)

Rtishcheva Galina Anatolyevna  (Candidate of Historical Sciences Associate Professor of the All-University Department of General and Russian History, IGN MGPU )

The article is devoted to the fate of southern Italian cities during the establishment of the power of Roger II of Sicily on the peninsula. In historiography this problem is usually considered from two sides: the socio-economic basis of the city or universitas (urban community and its representative munici) is studied. On this basis conclusions are made about the degree of proximity of the cities of Southern Italy to the Northern Italian communes. The author proposes to take into account in such studies the data of chronicles, which narrate the realities of the socio-political life of cities: Salerno, Naples, Troia and Bari, and make it possible to determine the degree of sustainability of their universitas.

Keywords:Southern Italy, Normans, universitas, military magistrate, Roger II of Sicily, commune
