Metaphors are a very interesting phenomenon in the Russian language. These are turns of speech consisting in the use of words and expressions in a figurative sense based on analogy, similarity and comparison. They make the statement bright, colorful, expressive, and for the most part are characteristic of fiction, oral folk art. They also contain some folk wisdom, which is expressed in proverbs and sayings. They represent certain images, symbolism, carry solid information about the subject or object of reality. In this paper, these figures of speech in proverbs are considered, their purpose, types and typology are determined.
However, it is worth noting that for a complete understanding of metaphors, for example, in the process of studying the Russian language, they should be considered in proverbs, since they clearly reveal the essence of the metaphor, its purpose, linguistic function, and also illustrate extralinguistic factors, for example, mentality, culture of the Russian people, life, traditions, which must be correctly interpreted by students and will contribute to the development of communication in the right direction.
The relevance of this study lies in the need to understand both metaphors and proverbs in the context of communication, as well as in the framework of studying Russian as a foreign language, which always causes difficulties.
The subject of the research is proverbs in the Russian language.
The object of the study is metaphorical combinations within proverbs, their typology and purpose.
The novelty of the study lies in identifying the features of the functioning of metaphorical meanings in proverbs in the modern Russian language.
