SPELLING OF COMPOUND NOUNS WITH THE FIRST PART ПОЛ- IN THE HISTORY OF RUSSIAN WRITING

Wang Yiming   (Postgraduate, Department of Russian Linguistics, Faculty of Philology, Lomonosov Moscow State University)

The article is devoted to the codification of continuous and hyphenated spelling of complex nouns with the first part пол- in diachrony. The usual norm is established on the material of the texts of the "National Corpus of the Russian Language" of the 18th–21st centuries, while the codified norm is established on the material of grammars and dictionaries of the 19th century, as well as sets of rules of the 20th–21st centuries. Compound nouns with the first part пол- from the very beginning are more often written together. In the 19th century an opposition is formed in which words with the second part in л, a capital letter or a vowel are hyphenated, and the rest are fused. True, at the same time, in the usus, there is a tendency to write all formations together in пол-, except for the second part in capital letters. Attempts to unify the spelling of these words in the hyphenated version went against the use, so the rule formulated by J.K. Grot at the end of the 19th century has remained relevant to our time: пол- in the compound word is written with a hyphen if the second part begins with a vowel letters, consonant l or capital letters, in other cases together.

Keywords:nouns with the first part пол-; continuous and hyphenated spelling; spelling in the XVIII-XXI centuries
