VERBALIZATION OF THE CONCEPT “BRAVE” BY MEANS OF THE ENGLISH ADJECTIVES

The article considers the expression of the concept brave by means of the English adjectives. The concept under consideration is referred to the category of cultural concepts, its anthropocentric character is also emphasized. The article dwells up-on the applicability of the evaluation scale for the description of the semantics of the concept, the evaluation done within the dichotomous range good – bad. The compliance of the adjectivally nominated quality with the socially accepted standard is also taken into account. The adjectives are regarded as components of a segment of the field composed by the lexemes representing the concept brave. The notion of the frame is applied to describe the structure of the considered field. The qualities nominated by the adjectives are regarded as expressing either positive evaluation or critical attitude. The accent is also made upon the degree of intensity of the property verbalized by the adjective, other connotations are of importance, too. These parameters specify the structure of the conceptual field, the adjectives are referred either to the center of the field or to its periphery.
