Russian and English belong to the Indo-European family of languages, they are genetically related languages of the inflectional system. Russian belongs to the East Slavic group of languages, English is a representative of the Western subgroup of Germanic languages, this explains the genetic relationship and typological similarity of Russian and English.
In this study, basing on grammatical verbal categories of the Aspect and Tense, it is shown how, in the course of time, the English language developed an analytical way of the internal organization of the Aspect and Tense system. The Russian language has been perfecting the intra-inflectional (synthetic) way. The author tries to present the verb systems of the Russian and English languages in historical, typological and comparative aspects.
