The article is devoted to the issue of deciphering and translating the old Turcic written monument from the 13th – 14th centuries - Codex Cumanicus using the resources of Karachay-Balkar language. The lexical, morphological and phonetic features of the Karachay-Balkar language, ancient Turkic elements which are preserved in this language, both in vocabulary and morphology, are studied in the article. The author affords that using the data of the Karachay-Balkar language may help in clarifying the translation and interpretation of ancient Turkic written monuments, especially Codex Cumanicus. The author also believes that an interdisciplinary method is important, involving data from folklore, ethnography and archeology.
