the presented material reveals the main forms and methods of work of the Russian police in the second half of the XVIII - first half of the XIX centuries to solve serious and especially serious crimes that caused the greatest public response. Special emphasis is placed on the fact that the police in special cases acted quickly, promptly, correctly identified the circle of suspects, successfully searched for suspects for a short time. Unfortunately, and the author points out this in particular, the so-called social approach was strictly observed in the activities of the police, when police officials made every effort to expose criminals from among the representatives of the lower strata of the population - petty bourgeois, peasants, poor nobles and made every effort to remove from criminal liability representatives of the so-called the so-called "upper classes" who have committed grave and especially grave offenses.
