Formation of translation competence when pupils use English texts

The article presents the matter of current interest concerning teaching pupils of senior forms translation. The aim of the article is to reveal some effective ways of forming pupils’ translation competence when they use English texts. The authors point out that, in order to achieve a high-quality translation of the text, the pupils should first form some basic translation competence consisting in their conscious application of the acquired knowledge. It is underlined that in the course of teaching translation one can realize educational, formative and practical purposes on the basis of the texts that correspond to definite criteria and through a complex of exercises built in compliance with the main didactic principles. In conclusion it is stated that due to the changes in the content of education the competence approach is becoming a priority. The formation of competence in the sphere of translation can be considered as part of the tasks in teaching translation at school. Competence as a pupil’s quality determines his ability to master competences, i.e. to cope with the situational activities directed at fulfilling socially useful functions.
