German Colonists in Russia from October 1917 to the Present Day

The article surveys the situation of German colonists and changes in their status after the October coup of 1917 and relevant policies of Soviet government in the RSFSR and the USSR over the entire Soviet period. The focus is on the following issues: foundation and development of the Volga Germans Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (1924–1941), status of Germans after deportation, visit of Chancellors Adenauer (1955) and H. Schmidt (1980) to Moscow and outcomes of these visits; the article studies Decrees and Ordinances of legislative and executive bodies of the USSR. The article also discusses the dynamics of improving the lives of Germans in the 1950-1980s, the movement for the German Autonomy, and fortunes and expectation of German settlers in the post-Soviet period.
