On the formation of four-lettered roots in modern Arabic colloquial languages

Ivanova Maria A.  (PhD (Philology), Associate Professor of the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (University) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia )

The aim of the work is to identify specific features of the formation of four-letter roots in modern colloquial Arabic languages and dialects and to compare it with the rules of word-formation in literary Arabic through internal inflexion. The analysis of the types of formation of four-letter roots in modern Arabic dialectal vocabulary has been carried out and the specifics of the formation of denominative and verbal roots has been examined. On the bases of the research the author comes to the conclusion that there are significant differences in the basic initial methods of root formation in colloquial languages and in the literary Arabic. The loss of a clear algebraic word structure in the literary language as well as the weakening and destruction of the boundaries of word-building models in colloquial languages leads to the appearance in colloquial languages of lexical units that are impossible and inapplicable in the literary Arabic.

Keywords:literary Arabic, colloquial languages and dialects, four-letter roots of the word, denominative and verbal word-formation.
