Discussion on the limits of the applicability of the 34th Apostolic canon in Russian Orthodoxy of the 20th century

Suvorov Vadim Gennad'evich  (Archpriest, Master of Science, Candidate of Theology, Competitor of Scientific Degree of Doctor, Church Doctoral Studies Center of Saints Cyril and Methodius, Lecturer, Kolomna seminary, Kolomna, Russia)

The absence in the Orthodox Church of a single administrative and coordination center is one of the most pressing problems of modern Orthodoxy, which was again demonstrated by the failed in 2016 Pan-Orthodox Council in Crete. The 34th Apostolic Canon, which is of fundamental importance for Orthodox ecclesiology, speaks about the necessity of the existence in the canonical structure of the Church of the first bishop, which the other bishops should recognize as a leader. The construction of modern Local Orthodox Churches is based on this rule, but the question of the applicability of this canon on the universal level still raises acute discussions in the Orthodox Church. The article discusses polemics on this issue in the Russian Orthodoxy of the 20th century, for which this issue acquired a special acuity of connection with the formation of several Orthodox jurisdictions in the Russian emigration. Based on an analysis of common ideas and differences in approaches, as well as the external conditions in which Russian Orthodox theologians from different jurisdictions were located, their positions were united by the author into three main groups on jurisdictional orientation – “Moscow”, “Karlovtsy” and “Evlogian”. The considered problems remain relevant both for Russian Orthodoxy and for the Orthodox Church as a whole.

Keywords:Primacy in the Universal Church, Orthodox ecclesiology, canon law, Russian Orthodox theology, the history of the Russian Orthodox Church, Russian emigration.
