Portrait of a character from the point of view of reference theory

Kostyrya A.   (Senior Lecturer, Perm State University)

The article deals with the category of the point of view and deixis as a tool of actualization. The subject of the research are the tools of actualization of the portrait of Elizabeth Bennet in the novel "Pride and prejudice" and its sequel. It is revealed that Jane Austen's idiostyle is characterized by formal descriptions, i.e. "formula" predicates that actualize the features of appearance, but do not have a specific referent. In this case, the point of view performs a characterological function in the novel, both for the object and for the subject of observation. The complementarity of these two tools ensures the authenticity of the portrait and the character herself. In the framework of the study of the category of secondariness and reference J. Austen’s novel is compared with the sequel for the identity of the portraits and the functions they implement. Analysis of the actualization of the portrait of Elizabeth in the sequel showed that there is no referential correlation between it and the original, and there is no logical connection. Thus, the reproduction of a portrait of a character is seen as necessary, although not trivial in the case of Jane Austen's style, in order to preserve the identity between the primary and secondary texts.

Keywords:actualization, reference, predicate, portrait of a character, "Pride and prejudice", Jane Austen, sequel.
