The purpose of the work is to analyze the production forces and indicate their relationship with family composition by the example of the families of the village of Zheltonogovo in the Krasnoslobodsky district of the Penza province at the end of the 18th and first half of the 19th centuries.
Method. The methodological potential includes: a comparatively historical method, the use of which allows us to show a comparative analysis of the development of various families; a statistical method, the significance of which is obvious for the analysis of data associated with changes in the peasant family over the study period.
Result. The study showed that at the end of the XVIII and the first half of the XIX century in the conditions of an agricultural economy, when dividing the economy, first of all, its potential in production was taken into account. Thanks to the method developed by A.V. Chayanov, the advantages of large peasant family groups of the late 18th and first half of the 19th centuries were shown.
Сonclusions. We can conclude that the sections primarily came from a difficult situation in the family (death of the head of the family, recruits, unauthorized departure, etc.). All this only strengthens the significance of large families that were economically profitable in the pre-reform period.
