Cataphora and valency: the correlation between notions

This article discusses the correlation between cataphoric reference and the notion of valency using the Russian broad meaning nouns as an example. Valency is defined as syntax characteristics of the lexical item. Cataphoric capacity of broad meaning nouns is compared to their valency capacity. The key characteristics of cataphora ‑ prospective reference ‑ is compared with the obligatory appearance of the objective complement along with the filling of valency.
