Acquiring of skimming and scanning skills by undergraduate students is the prerequisite of their involvement in research

Innovative development of the country economy significantly depends on the integration of science into all its sectors. Students` involvement in research in its turn defines the advancement of science in future. At the first stage of getting Bachelor`s Degree students have to acquire research skills. The process is gradual. It is provided in Moscow region state university through working with scientific articles at English lessons. The strategies of skimming and scanning reading are employed. The research has pursued two goals. First, prove the need to teach undergraduate students of the first year to skim and scan authentic articles as the prerequisite of their involvement in research in the perspective. Second, offer the algorithm of implementation of these techniques into educational practice. Qualitative and quantitative methods were applied. Bachelors of the first and second year were interviewed. The outcomes of winter session were analyzed. The results of the study show the effectiveness of integration of the algorithm of skimming and scanning reading into English course from the first year of study at the university.
