This article is devoted to teaching foreign languages to students of non-linguistic universities, it presents the main problems faced by teachers, and an attempt is made to identify the causes of these problems. Particular attention is paid to the requirements of the Federal State Educational Standard of Higher Education for the discipline "foreign language" in non-linguistic specialties. The results of a survey of students are described, which helped to determine the main motives of future specialists in the field of mass communication to learn a foreign language, as well as recommendations for maintaining motivation during the educational process and developing the creative potential necessary for the implementation of professional activities by university graduates. The author comes to the conclusion that the combination of tasks of a professionally oriented nature with creative ones in a foreign language class maintains the motivation of students, provides a high level of training of future specialists and makes them competitive in the modern labour market.
