The article considers the error of the name of the photo document stored in the Central State Administration of RSO-Alania. During the Great Patriotic War, Soviet cameramen filmed a huge amount of documentary material, and many pictures became symbols of heroism and steadfastness of the soldiers of the Red Army. However, the cameraman is not a military specialist and not infrequently mistakenly signed the filmed material, or the soldiers themselves indicated erroneous signatures on the equipment they destroyed and then photographed it. This phenomenon has not bypassed North Ossetia, where the archive found a picture with the wrong name, which was taken in East Prussia, but is issued as if captured on the territory of the republic. Such errors then end up in books written by historians, who, sometimes, also not understanding this topic, do not double-check the discovered material, thus losing scientific objectivity, although a lot has been written about military equipment of the WWII period and almost everything is posted online, even archival documents.
In the USSR, almost no attention was paid to the study of military equipment during the war, limited only to a brief mention of some of the main samples when describing combat operations, but in the 1990s interest in the topic increased again, and then the first domestic books on tanks, self-propelled guns, armored personnel carriers, BREM, etc. Began to be published. Having studied a huge array of information, you can easily identify samples of armored vehicles and even the place where they could have been shot, and then, detect errors in military images, which determines the relevance of the topic.
